On the utility of parks in relation to the elderly |
Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, one of the major parks in Singapore, is located between the housing estates of Bishan and Ang Mo Kio. It is a place frequented by all walks of life who visit the park mainly for exercise, recreational and dining activities.
Singapore faces the problem of an ageing population. In 2030, it is expected that 1 in 5 residents will be aged 65 and over, a huge increase from 1 in 12 in 2005. As can be seen from the below figure, The Ang Mo Kio constituency has the third largest proportion of elderly aged 65 years and above living there (21,400). |
Our proposal |
In this proposal, we hope to make Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park more elderly friendly so as to better cater to this expanding demographic age group.
Parks can play a significant role in promoting active ageing amongst the elderly. They provide spaces for the elderly to exercise, creates opportunities for social interaction and promotes a healthy emotional well-being. Our proposal is mainly split into 3 parts: 1. Flower garden 2. Elderly fitness corner 3. Open air cinema With the realisation of all three plans, we hope to be able to enhance the positive social and psychological effects that parks have on the entire community, the elderly in particular. |
